Celebrating Matariki Together!

During June, Newtown Park Apartments came alive with warmth, creativity and connection as our community gathered to celebrate Matariki, a special time of remembrance, reflection and renewal in Aotearoa.

Hosted by residents of Newtown Park, Kaylah and the wider Te Toi Mahana housing community, the event was a heartfelt expression of unity and culture. Home Ground brought the energy with a range of activities that invited people to come together in meaningful and creative ways.

One of the most moving parts of the evening was the Rocks of Remembrance table where residents decorated stones in memory of loved ones. It was a peaceful space for reflection and a chance to honour those who are no longer with us. The Gratitude Window Display was filled with colour and love, showcasing artwork inspired by the strength and beauty of our community.

The interactive 'Make a Wish Upon a Star' Window gave everyone a moment to pause and write down a wish or hope for the year ahead.

The afternoon vibe was boosted with Amira’s live DJ set spinning North African and Arabic beats. Laughter and music echoed around the flats as tamariki danced and whānau connected.

Over at the Mehndi Magic station, Shazia had people lining up for beautiful henna tattoos adding an extra spark of celebration and creativity to the day.

Thank you to everyone who came along and helped make the day so special. Whether you were painting a rock, writing a wish or simply enjoying the music and company, your presence helped bring Matariki to life in our neighbourhood.
